Flies show us how to slow reproductive aging

Denise Montell, CALS-affiliated faculty member, explores reproductive longevity in fruit flies

February 7, 2022

In a paper recently published in Nature Communications by the Montell Lab at UCSB, researchers explore reproductive longevity in fruit flies. By studying how the reproductive process is put on hold in female flies during a state called diapause, the researchers were able to “hack” the system and prolong reproductive lifespan of flies on demand. This kind of fundamental research gives us a better understanding of how aging occurs in humans and how we might be able to reduce age-related diseases.
