Indigenous populations beating dementia
CALS-affiliated faculty member, Michael Gurven, awarded multi-million dollar grant to study dementia in Indigenous populations
Professor Michael Gurven has been working with indigenous communities in Bolivia to investigate how lifestyle and environmental factors relate to Alzheimer’s and other age related diseases. In a new paper, Gurven and colleagues reveal that the Tismane and Moseten people of Bolivia enjoy the lowest rates of dementia in the world. Gurven and his team have been awarded a $13 million dollar grant to re-visit these communities and more deeply explore questions about how the environment shapes the way we age.
