CALS-affiliate, Howie Giles was recently named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine
Congratulations to Howie Giles on the prestigious honor of being named Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine!
Howard “Howie” Giles was Professor and Chair of Social Psychology at Bristol University, UK, before he came to the Department of Communication in March 1989. He became an affiliated faculty member of the Center for Aging and Longevity Studies in November 2022. Howie was Chair of the Communications Department for 8 years, and is now a Distinguished Research Professor.
Howie studies intergroup communication across a wide variety of between-groups settings. He currently focuses on intergenerational communication for successful aging and police-community relations. He has been the Past President of the International Communication Association and is Fellow of eight other professional associations across
Psychology, Intercultural Relations, and Gerontology. However, Howie contends this nomination could be "THE jewel in
his crown” because "his parents wanted him to be a medical doctor... so they would be very proud of this medical-
related honor."
