Howie Giles and colleagues win Outstanding Book Award
This 2023 Award is sponsored by the National Communication Association's (NCA) "Communication & Aging" (CAD) Division
The book is titled, "Communication and successful aging: Empowering individuals across the lifespan" written by Howie Giles, Jessica Gasiorek, Sharde Davis, & Jane Giles (2022: Routledge). Besides discussing recent developments in the authors’ "communication ecology model of successful aging", one of the book’s major themes is that managing aging is not so much about how you think, or how old you feel, but rather: how "old" you communicate and are communicated to and about." Howie was recipient of the Inaugural Book Award in 2015 and the Inaugural Outstanding Journal Article Award in 2015 and winner again in 2022.
The NCA Division commended the book as it “...is nicely grounded in leading-edge theory and reflective of a productive line of research by the authors .... [and] appreciated that it “focuses squarely on communicative aspects of aging.” The Award will be presented at the 109th. Annual National Communication Association Meeting, November 16., 2023, in Baltimore.
Howie Giles is a CALS-affiliate in the Department of Communication at UCSB.
