Research Overview

Our cells are constantly adapting to their environment by remodeling their gene expression, proteome, and morphology. One fascinating example of cellular adaptation and versatility is the peroxisome, a membrane-bound organelle that is remodeled across evolution and development to meet the specific metabolic needs of cells. The Gardner lab is interested in understanding how cells regulate peroxisome homeostasis, and what happens when these mechanisms go awry. As peroxisome-related disorders are associated with neuro-degeneration and metabolic disorders, Dr. Gardner's team hypothesize that peroxisome degeneration occurs with age and contributes to the progression of aging-related diseases.
