CALS-affiliated scholars strive to understand how aging leads to progressively increased rates of many diseases, including cancer, heart disease, stroke and neurodegeneration. This research is approached through both fundamental biological studies into aging and by revealing how human behavior can forestall the onset of age-related disease. Results from this research may make it possible to slow the aging process and in so doing, to diminish the incidence of a broad range age-related diseases, resulting in extension of the youthful and healthy period of one’s life. Through such research it may be possible to discover specific strategies that effectively decrease many diseases simultaneously, thereby diminishing healthcare burden and costs, and promoting a more robust human population.
